Richard Phillip Roberts was born on December 24, 1840 in Estill Co., KY. He was the sixth child of fourteen children born to George Roberts and Polly Gum. Richard's father, George Roberts, was a native of Kentucky and was born on June 04, 1808. Richard's mother was Mary A. (Polly) Gum, born on November 16, 1814 in Estill Co., Kentucky. Polly's parents were Abraham Gum and Susannah Phillips, natives of Clay Co., KY who moved to Estill Co., KY shortly after their marriage.

The entire Roberts family moved to DeKalb Co., Missouri in 1857, however, Richard Roberts returned to Estill Co., KY and married his sweetheart Louisa Park. Louisa Park was born on March 14, 1844. She was the daughter of Isham Park and Dianah Benton of Estill Co., KY.Richard Roberts enlisted in Company C of the 8th Kentucky Infantry. He is listed as having obtained the rank of Corporal. He was a member of the G.A.R., Capt. C.C. Harvey Post, Missouri 96 in DeKalb Co., MO.

Richard Roberts returned with his family to DeKalb Co., MO about 1870. He died in 1917 and is buried in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in DeKalb Co., MO. He isburied beside his wife, Louisa, who died on April 26, 1914.Richard and Louisa were the parents of 6 children: Elmer Roberts, Mary Georgia Roberts b. 1865 in KY, Diana Anna Roberts b. 1868 in KY, Luna Roberts b. 1870 in MO, Leslie B. Roberts b. 1873 in MO, and Walter Roberts.  Mary Georgia Roberts married George K. Gwathmey. Diana Anna Roberts married William E. Lewis. Leslie B. Roberts married William N. Bowen.
