Jonathan Dillard (John D.) Gum was born on July 04, 1842 in Estill Co., KY. He was the son of Steven B. Gum (b. June 29, 1820) and Elizabeth Reynolds (b. 1824). He was the grandson of Abraham Gum and Susannah Phillips. Jonathan married Emily Boian, daughter of William Boian and Mariah Park, both of whom were natives of Virginia. Emily was born on March 28, 1840 in Estill Co., KY.
Jonathan and Emily were the parents of six children: Lee Gum b. May 29, 1859, Steve B. Gum b. 1863, Cassius Park Gum b. September 10, 1864, Brutus Gum b. December 25, 1866, Rhoda Gum b. August 03, 1871, and William H. Gum b. December 05, 1873.
Jonathan Dillard Gum enlisted in Company C, 8th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry and was listed with the rank of Corporal.
Jonathan Gum died on June 25, 1913. Emily died on January 10, 1915. They are buried in the Gum Cemetery located on Dug Hill Road near Irvine in Estill Co., KY.
