Genealogical Information
Charles Estes was born February 12, 1837, the son of Charles and Sarah Hutton Estes. He married Dianna Newton, the daughter of Allen B. and Rachel Isaacs Newton on December 9, 1864 at her parents. They were married by Enoch Wakefield. They lived near Old Landing in Lee County, Kentucky. They were the parents of at least eight children: Ellie, Born ca 1866; Millie, born ca 1867; Thomas, born ca 1869; Sopha, Born ca. 1877; Ellen, born ca 1879; and Lillie Ann, born in June of 1883. Three of the eight were dead by 1900.
Charles was one of four brothers who served in the Civil War. The other three were Hiram, Asberry, and Brazil. Charles enrolled in Company B, 8th Ky on the 23rd of September 1861 at Estill Springs, KY. At Bardstown, KY on the 7th of October 1862, he was stricken with Typhoid Fever and chronic diarrhea. He was left sick at Bardstown October 4, 1862. Charles was transferred to Company A by consolidation in January of 1864. He was mustered out with the Company on the 17th of November 1864 at Louisville, KY. He received a pension under certification number 558900 due to chronic diarrhea and disease of the lungs caused by the typhoid fever. He was 5ft 10 ½ in. tall, fair complected and had light hair and blue eyes. He died March 6 1914 at the age of 77.
